About The Guide
Developed over a decade ago, The JP Guide™ started as a simple, one-page spreadsheet of notes with bits of information about the airports I traveled to and the boundary frequencies I used to contact countries as I passed through their airspace. As the destinations increased, especially the challenging ones like Guatemala City, I made more and more entries about my observations and the complexities each airport presented.
Through observation as a junior First Officer, I noted how the senior guys made it look safe and easy based on their many years of experience. As the years passed, I developed some of my techniques to include where to be and when to be so my flights to these places were as safe and in control as I could make them. Planning is a major part of the battle was as safe as became familiar with frequencies I and who to contact as I passed from on country’s airways developed by Captain JP Foreman of American Airlines. It has been in development for over a decade and initially began as simple notes every time I flew to a new international destination. The guide was a simple, one-page spreadsheet. There were notes about observations and a few things that would make future trips easier. Although radio frequencies can be found on charts and approach plates, oftentimes, there are so many, and knowing the right ones and being ready when crossing into the next countries’ boundary can be helpful especially when radio contact is lost or out of range. Simple notes started to add up and over time, the “what to expect” information started to make the journeys far less stressful. There were simple reminders and bits of information that made flying to these places easier!
